Cracking the skincare code. By Deborah Gardiner, Skincare Specialist.

Assumptions about skin type.

Skin. We all have it. It's our largest organ. But caring for it the right way can be complicated. Over the course of your life you've probably made some assumptions about your skin:

“My Mom/Sister/Aunt has oily skin, so I do too." It's natural to think your skin must be like your family's but this isn't always the case.

“My friend recommended this, it worked so well for them.” Just because it works for them, doesn’t mean it will work for you.

Using the wrong products can cause more problems than it solves — clogged pores, texture, flakiness, and blemishes, just to name a few. Whether you need skincare for sensitive skin or oily skin, deciphering your true skin type gives you the power to find the products that will help you achieve the clear, glowing, healthy skin you desire.

The different skin types.

To keep things simple, our skin is often classified into four main types:  Dry, Oily, Combination, Normal.
You might be thinking, "But what about...."  Of course, there's more to your skin than these four basic skin types. Every person's skin is unique, and our skin is much more complex than just four types. Maybe one of these concerns is on your mind: Breakouts, Blackheads, Redness, Aging, Hyperpigmentation, etc. We’ll get to that. Now back to the matter at hand — Finding Your True Skin Type.

It starts with two simple steps that take just a few minutes. A great time to test yourself is right out of the shower. Let’s get started:

Determine Your Skin Type In 2 Steps

Identifying your skin type.

Question 1:  How does your skin feel right now?*

  1. Tight or Dull. Then you might be Dry.
  2. Shiny or Greasy. Then you might be Oily.
  3. All the above! Oily T-zone (forehead, nose & chin) but dry everywhere else. Then you might be Combination.
  4. Um, like skin?! Not too dry, tight or oily. Then you might be Normal.**

**Hold up: Don’t feel bad if you do not fit the “Normal” category. It's a confusing term that, in our experience, only applies to a small portion of people!

Question 2: How does your skin look?

Take a look at your pores from a few different angles. What do you see?

  1. Small or Tight. Then you might have Dry Skin.
  2. Large or Easily Clogged. Then you might have Oily Skin.
  3. Some of this, some of that. Then you might have Combination Skin.
  4. It still just looks like skin... Then you might have Normal Skin.

Note: Everyone has pores. You. Me. Even models, actors, and influencers!
