What causes eczema?
A single triggering factor as the cause of eczema has not yet been pinpointed. There may be several underlying factors in play like genetics, or other lifestyle-based triggers that weaken the immune system such as stress, diet and lack of sleep. People with atopic eczema may have a genetic tendency for an over reactive immune system that causes the skin barrier to become dry and itchy and triggers and inflammatory reaction in the skin.
How does eczema impact skin sensitivity?
The most common symptoms associated with eczema are signs of sensitivity including itching, flakiness, extreme dryness, tightness and inflamed and sore patches. These problem areas of skin are most often located on the face, hands, feet and the creases inside of elbow and knee joints. People suffering from eczema will increased skin sensitivity, but you can have a sensitive skin without suffering from eczema at all.
Can strengthening the skin barrier support with eczema?
The good news is that it can. People suffering from eczema will have a weakened skin barrier. The weaker the skin barrier, the more easily external aggressors will be able to enter the layers of skin beneath, which will trigger even more signs of sensitivity, so the whole thing becomes a vicious sensitising spiral. Having a more resilient skin barrier will help to decrease the symptoms of eczema, but will not help to treat the condition, as only cortico-steroid prescriptions drug can actually treat this condition.
Can eczema be cured?
Unfortunately, there is no cure for eczema, only treatments that will help to elongate the time between and decrease the intensity of flare ups like corticosteroids. However, using some naturally efficacious products in between eczema flare ups can help to strengthen the skin’s barrier and reduce the signs of sensitivity and discomfort associated with the condition.
